Central Island athletes haul major medals from BC Summer Games

NANAIMO — Athletes from across the mid-Island have returned home with heavy hardware from the recent BC Summer Games.

Held in Prince George between Thursday, July 21 and Sunday, July 24, up to 3,600 participants competed in 18 sports for the 32nd iteration of the event, held every two years.

Individual athletes from Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Lantzville, Nanoose Bay and Ladysmith claimed a combined 15 gold medals, eight silver and eight bronze.

Team sports accounted for another eight gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

A complete list of medals won by competing individual athletes is below:

Gold

  • Amanda Stewart (Parksville) – Swimming Special Olympics – 50 metre freestyle, 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre freestyle, 100 metre breaststroke, 50 metre breaststroke
  • Brodie Stevens (Parksville) – Swimming Special Olympics – 100 metre backstroke, 200 metre freestyle
  • Natasha Phillips (Nanaimo) – Athletics Special Olympics – 100 metre, 200 metre, 400 metre, long jump, shot put
  • Sash Barbour (Nanaimo) – Athletics Special Olympics – Shot put
  • Gavin Esleyer (Nanaimo) – Athletics – 300 metre
  • Ben Jeffery (Lantzville) – Towed Water Sports – 14-17 years Wakeboard

Silver

  • Hailey Willie (Nanaimo) – Athletics Special Olympics – 100 metre, 200 metre, long jump, 400 metre
  • Amanda Stewart (Parksville) – Swimming Special Olympics – 50 metre butterfly, 100 metre backstroke
  • Manpreet Lalh (Nanaimo) – Golf
  • Max Jeffery (Lantzville) – Towed Water Sports – 14-17 years Wakeskate
  • Colton Gonzales (Ladysmith) – 100 metre backstroke

Bronze

  • Sash Barbour (Nanaimo) – Athletics Special Olympics – 100 metre, 200 metre, 800 metre
  • Jack Mace (Nanaimo) – Triathlon – 16-17 years sprint, 16-17 years F1
  • Angela Smith (Nanaimo) – Canoe/Kayak – C-1 1000 metre open
  • Soren Lee (Ladysmith) – Athletics – shot put
  • Ben Jeffery (Lantzville) – Towed Water Sports – 14-17 years Wakeboard

  • Boys Field Lacrosse – Gavin Bourne, Keenan DeWit, Ethan Gordan, Corbin Mahy, Kai Sanderson (all Nanaimo), Deo Toth (Ladysmith)

Bronze

  • Artistic Swimming – Isabella Hanson, Morgan Jessey (both Nanaimo)
  • Artistic Swimming – Laryssa MacDonald, Lila Keeling (both Nanaimo)
  • Girls Beach Volleyball – Jordan Connors (Nanaimo)
  • Swimming 4×200 metre freestyle relay – Taelin Stephen (Ladysmith)

The 2024 BC Summer Games will be hosted by Maple Ridge, who were the host city in 2020 prior to the event being cancelled.
