High-traffic Nanaimo intersection to be repaved leading to brief disruption

Jul 19, 2022 | 10:27 AM

NANAIMO — One of the city’s busiest intersections is getting some overdue work.

City of Nanaimo crews will close portions of the Bowen Rd. at Northfield Rd. intersection on Tuesday, July 19 between 7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. for paving work.

The right hand southbound lane on Bowen Rd. will shut down near the intersection, while both directions of Northfield Rd. between Bowen Rd. and Boxwood Rd. will also be closed during the resurfacing.

Detours will send traffic down Meredith St. to re-join Bowen Rd., while signage on the Island Hwy. will ask arriving Departure Bay ferry traffic to divert away from Northfield Rd.

Potholes throughout the intersection have persisted and grown over recent months leading to unusual turns and paths through the area for some vehicles.

City crews had been patching the intersection, waiting for a more extensive overhaul as part of the Boxwood Connector project, however delays have seen the project delayed.

It means dedicated work to patch potholes must again take place.

The City of Nanaimo said they conducted a round of repairs following the December snow event, as well as regular visits prior.

Road work will close one of Nanaimo’s busiest intersections for just over three hours on Tuesday night, to repair stubborn potholes at the corner of Northfield Rd. and Bowen Rd. (Alex Rawnsley/NanaimoNewsNOW)
