Annual trunk sale returns to give new life to old items

NANAIMO — It’s time to get the junk out of your trunk.

A popular swap meet-style event is returning Saturday, July 16 with around 100 vendors selling used, garage sale-type items out of the trunk of their cars at Country Club Centre.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with City manager of sanitation and recycling Taaj Daliran saying the trunk sale is a platform to get a new lease on life for unused items.

“Items that may be sitting in our backyard, garage or storages and we don’t use them, but what if someone else can? It’s simply giving a second chance to these items to be used and not sitting somewhere unused until they end up going to the landfill.”

Information will also be available on the City of Nanaimo’s zero waste initiatives, waste collection and recycling programs.

No retail booths are permitted and items must be in good, used condition. New items can be sold, provided they’re made from recycled materials.

“If you are making items out of recyclable items, if you are changing, modifying items that can be reused, this is an opportunity to allow other people to buy them and use them,” Daliran added.

The trunk sale is a precursor to the popular Reuse Rendezvous, which sees participating households put items in front of their houses for people to drive around, browse and collect for free.
