Nanaimo NHL’ers swapping jerseys during first day of free agency

NANAIMO — A pair of players with local hockey connections have moved as the NHL opened up its annual free agency period.

Dylan Coghlan, who grew up in Nanaimo, was traded from the Vegas Golden Knights to the Carolina Hurricanes, along with forward Max Pacioretty, in exchange for future considerations. Coghlan was coming to the end of a one year deal but did not receive a qualifying offer from Vegas.

It’ll be the second NHL team Coghlan has suited up with after making his league debut with the Golden Knights in 2021. He scored his first goal, later converted into a hattrick, during a March 20, 2021 game against Minnesota.

Coghlan played 88 games with the Golden Knights, scoring six times and adding 13 assists.

Also on the move is former Nanaimo Clipper Sheldon Rempal, moving from the Vancouver Canucks to the Golden Knights.

Rempal played just one game with Vancouver last season, but was a standout for their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford where he scored 33 times and added another 36 assists.

Those totals were good enough for eighth in overall league scoring in the regular season.

Rempal spent three years in Nanaimo as a member of the Clippers, notching a career-best 59 goals in the 2015-16 season.

Overall, he scored 213 points in 167 games in the BCHL before attending Clarkson University for two seasons then turning pro with the LA Kings organization.

Elsewhere, Matt Irwin is remaining in Washington after re-signing with the team for one season.

He had one goal and three assists in 17 games last season and has played 400 career NHL games with Nashville, Anaheim, Buffalo and the Capitals.

Irwin was a Nanaimo Clipper for three full seasons between 2005 and 2008.
