1 person injured in Nanaimo shooting, police search for suspect

NANAIMO — Police say a man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a shooting in the city’s north end.

The incident occurred outside a home on Laguna Way at the corner of Lost Lake Rd. on Thursday, July 7 at about 8 p.m.

Several witnesses told police the suspect took off in a vehicle.

“There’s a lot of witnesses, we’ve canvassed the area and we’ve obtained a lot of information on the suspect and vehicle, so we’re not releasing that (information) to the public,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The injured man is in his early 30’s was transported to hospital by paramedics.

O’Brien said it’s believed the shooting was targeted.

“There’s an inherent risk to the public when anybody uses a firearm — having said that, we believe this was an isolated incident and there is no substantial risk to the public,” O’Brien said.

He wouldn’t reveal what type of gun was used or how many times the victim was shot.

Tenants inside the home at the time provided statements to police on scene.

Investigators were seen canvassing inside and outside the home for several hours after the shooting.

Crime tape surrounding the property was removed by early Friday morning.

The rental property is outfitted with several exterior security cameras which are being used to advance the police investigation.

The incident occurred the same week Nanaimo City Council agreed to a four-year spending plan of a $1.8 million dollar federal grant to combat gun and gang violence.
