Clear skies across mid-Island allowing for unobstructed view of rare planetary alignment
NANAIMO — It’ll require an extra early pot of coffee, but the weather forecast is cooperating for local stargazers to catch a rare sight.
A planetary alignment will come to fruition early Friday, June 24 where Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter will all appear in a line, in order. If timed right viewers will also see a crescent moon for good measure.
Dr. Gregory Arkos, an astronomy professor at Vancouver Island University, told NanaimoNewsNOW it’s an event which occurs roughly every 20 years.
“You can get a couple of the planets here and there to come together once a year, once every couple of years but to get five or six objects that are naked eye bright that you can see without needing a telescope, in the same chunk of the sky…is fairly rare.”
