Woman found dead in south Nanaimo home deemed a homicide victim

Jun 21, 2022 | 11:37 AM

NANAIMO — One male is in custody in connection with a fatal altercation at a home on Eighth St. in Nanaimo’s Harewood neighbourhood.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said police reported to a disturbance call on Monday, June 20 at around 10 p.m.

“Upon arriving on scene we found a deceased adult. A short time later a male suspect was taken into custody. That individual has not been charged and investigators do not believe there is any further risk to the public.”

O’Brien confirmed the victim was a woman and that the suspect was arrested without incident.

He wouldn’t elaborate on the relationship between the parties involved.

No further information will be released from police at this time, O’Brien said.

Numerous police investigators were behind crime scene tape surrounding a property at the end of Eighth St. near Park Avenue Elementary School on Tuesday, June 21.

Neighbours reported a heavy presence of emergency responders late on Monday evening.

The incident marks the second homicide of 2022 in Nanaimo after police located the body of Eric Kutzner at Buzz Coffee House on February 12.

A second-degree murder charge was laid against 29-year-old James Carey Turok in that case, who remains in custody after a psychiatric assessment cleared him to stand trial.

A first-degree murder charge was applied in March against 26-year-old Paris Jayanne Laroche in connection with the death of 32-year-old Sidney Joseph Mantee.

Laroche also remains in custody.

Four other investigations linked to homicides in Nanaimo 2021 have yet to result in charges.
