NANAIMO — Local Mounties are trying to identify a man accused of exposing himself to a girl.

The 17-year-old teen reported to police a man committed the indecent act on Friday, June 10 around 10 a.m. as she walked along Fifth St. towards Wakesiah Ave.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said the victim initially saw the man standing in an alleyway between Hillcrest Ave. and Lambert Ave. when he flashed her, before escalating the situation.

“He actually started walking towards her while committing an indecent act. She yelled at the individual and said she was calling the police. He turned around and ran southbound down the alleyway toward Harewood Rd.”

Searches of the surrounding area were unsuccessful, despite the fact the victim photographed the individual as he ran off.

O’Brien praised how she reacted to the traumatic incident.

“She reported the incident as quick as possible, she used her phone in the correct manner and it’s going to allow us to really move forward with this investigation,” O’Brien added.

The man is described as being in his 50’s, caucasian, standing about 5’10” with a medium build. He has grey hair with a longer, sunken face.

The victim said he was wearing a skull cap, grey-purple partial zip up shirt and brown cargo pants at the time.

O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW, if caught the individual would face a criminal charge of indecent exposure.

“The charge is not upgraded because it is a minor, but Crown will certainly take into consideration the circumstances behind the offence.”

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Nanaimo detachment at 250-754-2345, quoting file number 2022-19747.
