Harry Potter-clad canines chase Quidditch Cup glory

NANAIMO — It might not quite be the golden snitch, but for dogs competing this weekend a flying frisbee is just as fun to grab.

The Nanaimo Disc Dog Club is hosting their annual three-day event at Cedar Community Secondary School over the long weekend, bringing together area dogs and their trainers to display their best trips.

Christina Young with the club told NanaimoNewsNOW they have between 30 to 40 dogs competing in different events through the long weekend.

“We have dogs from all over B.C. and a few from south of the border, coming all together to compete with discs in all sorts of games. We’re playing six different games every day, some involve costumes, some involve tricks, some are distance, some are close-range strategy games.”

Events from from 9 a.m. until roughly 5:30 p.m. until Monday, May 23 at the school on MacMillan Rd.

The theme is Harry Potter, with the winning pup earning the Quidditch Cup come Monday afternoon.

A wide array of ages, breeds and skill sets are on display.

“There are dogs at all levels here, there are some puppies. I think the youngest is about five or six months old and some of the older ones, my 11.5 year old blind dog will be competing then we’ve got highly trained dogs who are preparing to go to nationals.”

Spectators are welcome to attend and learn more about disc sports.

“There’s a lot of very experienced players who are coming this weekend, we have 12 certified judges so lots of people who can answer questions and talk to people about the sport.”

Young the dog sports community is a close-knit group who haven’t been able to gather, like many others, for the last two years.

This weekend marks the fifth year of the annual event held over the May long weekend, but is comfortably the largest since before the pandemic.

Young added all of the dogs on the field are trained positively.

“All the dogs on the field are being trained with toys and food rewards and we’re all just about having fun with our dogs.”
