NANAIMO — One year to the day bullets sprayed an SUV leaving one man dead in Nanaimo, RCMP say their investigation remains active.

On May 20, 2021 several bullets pierced the driver’s side window of a vehicle parked at Rock City Centre shopping centre, where a man was pronounced dead on scene and a white SUV sped away.

RCMP say three men were arrested at north Nanaimo’s Best Western Hotel in the aftermath of the shooting and later released.

Two days following the shocking incident, Nanaimo RCMP stated the shooting was tied Lower Mainland gang violence.

Sgt. Chris Manseau of BC RCMP Communications Services told NanaimoNewsNOW police continue receiving useful information as part of their probe.

“The investigation remains active and ongoing. Members of the Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crime Unit continue to investigate and follow-up on tips,” Manseau said in a statement.

Anyone who previously relayed information to police and are unclear if it was received or not are told to reach out to the investigative team, Manseau stated.

“Charge recommendations have not been forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service for any of the three people arrested,” he said.

The vehicle was seized shortly after the shooting, however police believe it was in the Nanaimo area several days prior.
