Intoxicated man injured in altercation with Nanaimo RCMP

NANAIMO — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating after a man was seriously injured while in custody at the Nanaimo RCMP detachment.

The investigation follows an incident on the afternoon of April 22, 2022 when police responded to a complaint of an intoxicated man in the 400 block of Wesley St.

He was allegedly being verbally abusive to someone else living in a home.

Police went to the scene and arrested the man for uttering threats and transported him to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment.

Police say when the man was being placed in a detachment holding cell, he become aggressive again and an altercation occurred between him and a police officer.

The man suffered serious injuries to his leg and arm during the altercation and was transported to hospital for treatment.

The matter is now under investigation by the IIO and no further information is being released at this time.

The IIO, an independent police watchdog, is tasked with investigating all incidents of serious injuries or deaths during interactions with police province-wide.
