NANAIMO — Ferry service between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland is being affected due to a mechanical issue.

The Queen of Oak Bay experienced a mechanical failure in its steering gear during a trip late on Wednesday, April 13 resulting in a substantial delay for passengers and subsequent cancellations.

Sailings from Departure Bay at 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. are cancelled on Thursday, April 14 in addition to several through the early morning hours.

Crossings from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo at 10:40 a.m. and 5:05 p.m. are also cancelled.

Mechanical issues on the Queen of Oak Bay are being compounded by other vessels being out of commission due to annual refits.

It’s unclear how the change in vessel availability will impact Easter long weekend sailings.
