NANAIMO — A man found unresponsive at the bottom of a steep cliff at a north Nanaimo park was flown to hospital for advanced medical treatment.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) assistant chief Troy Libbus said the man was discovered off the end of the park’s trail system Monday, April 11 at about 7:30 p.m.

“The patient was at the bottom of a cliff, around 60 feet, he fell from the top and he’s an elderly man with head injuries,” Libbus said.

Libbus said the seriously injured man, believed to be in his 60’s, shifted between in and out of consciousness after emergency responders arrived and began treating him on scene.

An air ambulance was dispatched to the park, which landed beside the trail near the parking lot.

The injured man was transferred onto a spine board to a waiting ground ambulance, then lastly placed into the chopper.

He was flown from the scene about two hours after being discovered.

Libbus said it was critically important for the two people in the park to spot the downed man and immediately call for help.

He said the situation could have been much worse if the man wasn’t found before darkness set in.

“A couple individuals found him and called 911 right away and they didn’t hesitate. I want to thank those Good Samaritans.” Libbus said.

It’s unclear how long the man had been in distress for, who was believed to be in the park by himself.
