Construction starts on new Nanaimo Correctional Centre
NANAIMO — Crews are mobilized at the Nanaimo Correctional Centre (NCC) where the medium security prison will be replaced, with an estimated project completion of 2024.
Replacing the aging institution built in 1953 involves demolishing existing buildings in phases and constructing a dozen new ones within the existing property, according to the project’s architect.
The existing 190-room capacity on Biggs Rd. on Brannen Lake will remain, which will resemble a campus-style feel, while a new 12-room unit specifically for women will be included.
The architect noted a portion of the of the new facility’s main administration building will be the only visible building facing Biggs Rd.
