GABRIOLA ISLAND — One man was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries after he was attacked on a rural property.

A call from the victim to 911 on Sunday, April 3 at around 7:20 p.m. was made in relation to an assault outside a home in the 500 block of South Rd.

Gabriola Island RCMP Cpl. Jordan Mullen told NanaimoNewsNOW the incident involved two men in their 70’s known to each other, where the victim was hit multiple times with what’s believed to be a sharp tool.

“He was struck in the head several times. He was taken to the hospital. He’s since been released [Monday] morning. There was no surgery required.”

The victim was transported by ground ambulance and ferry to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, where Mullen said he received stitches due to several lacerations.

The accused was arrested for aggravated assault soon after the incident and released from police cells on Gabriola Island. Mullen said his release conditions entail he can’t return to the Island pending legal proceedings.

The accused has not yet been charged and faces a future court appearance in Nanaimo.

Mullen emphasized the incident was isolated and the public is not at risk.

He wouldn’t comment the relationship between the victim and accused, adding police are investigating the cause of the incident.

“We do know that there was a verbal confrontation and we would just ask if anyone else witnessed the incident or heard of it to contact us.”
