Clippers win first playoff game in two years 3-2 over Surrey

NANAIMO — A tight checking game went down to the wire with the Clippers securing a 3-2 win over the Eagles.

The Clippers hadn’t played a post season contest in two years because of COVID-19 but won their fifth straight playoff game dating back to March of 2020.

After a scoreless first period Sean Donaldson gave Nanaimo a lead 21 seconds into the middle frame.

By the ten minute mark of the second the Eagles had forged ahead on markers by Primo Self and Ben Fontaine.

A power play deflection by Brody Waters put Nanaimo back on even terms eight minutes into the final period.

Clipper veteran Austin Spiridakis put a ripped a shot on net from the corner with two and a half minutes left to give Nanaimo a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.

Cooper Black was strong with 22 saves for the victory while Max Prazma stopped 19 shots for Surrey.

The game was cleanly played with Nanaimo getting to the man advantage three times and not having a single penalty kill.

There is a short turn around with Game 2 set for Frank Crane Arena on April 2 at 7 p.m.
