Contaminated oyster advisory expands, more brands added to recall list

QUALICUM BEACH — People are being told not to eat additional brands of oysters following an expanded recall by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

Several types of Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC branded oysters in a range of sizes harvested throughout March in Baynes Sound were flagged for Norovirus contamination.

The company’s impacted products include Fanny Bay Oysters, Royal Miyagi Oysters and Sunseeker Oysters.

A detailed list of the updated recall alert can be reviewed here.

A Norovirus contamination recall order also applies to various oysters produced by Pacific Rim Shellfish, which were also harvested from Baynes Sound in March. Details of that advisory are listed here.

The CFIA stated the main symptoms of Norovirus are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps.

Other symptoms may include low-grade fever, headache, chills, muscle aches and fatigue.

“Most people feel better within one or two days, with symptoms resolving on their own, and experience no long-term health effects,” the CFIA stated.

Reported illnesses have been reported due to the consumption of the oysters in the products referenced in this story.

The CFIA confirmed is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

Last week the CFIA reported the recall of Stellar Bay Shellfish brand of Chef Creek Oysters harvested and processed in Deep Bay on March 7 due to several cases of Norovirus-like illnesses.
