Cyclist seriously hurt after hit by car in central Nanaimo

Mar 28, 2022 | 2:44 PM

NANAIMO — A cyclist hit at a central Nanaimo intersection has Nanaimo RCMP reminding motorists to be mindful of increasing numbers of cyclists using area roads.

Police say on Thursday, March 24 around 1:30 p.m. a 66-year-old cyclist and his wife were riding in the marked bike lane when he was hit at the intersection of Townsite Rd. and Bush St.

The injured cyclist was transported to nearby hospital with significant but not life-threatening injuries.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said drivers need to pay close attention to bike lanes.

“As the weather gets warmer and more and more cyclists are on the streets of Nanaimo, motorists and cyclists need to pay attention to bicycle lanes and how they intersect with the flow of vehicle traffic,” O’Brien said in a news release. “The injured cyclist in this case was lucky to receive only the injuries he did and that a worse outcome was avoided”.

A 19-year-old woman driving an older model Toyota Corolla remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.

She was given a violation ticket for conducting an unsafe lane change.
