Snowbirds returning to Vancouver Island for final prep ahead of summer touring season

NANAIMO — Expect the familiar roar of in-formation flying to come to eastern Vancouver Island in the near future.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds will begin their trek westward to base out of the Comox Valley for spring training on April 19.

Capt. Gabriel Ferris, public affairs officer for the Snowbirds, said they’ll depart their year-round home in Moose Jaw in search of warmer weather and some last minute training.

“We’re a little bit late in our training schedule because of all the weather we’ve had here. We had a lot of icy runways, blowing snow, just bad visibility with a lot of wind and cold weather in Moose Jaw.”

As a result of the poor weather, the team had to cancel their first swing of tours in the United States.

The Snowbirds will depart the region on May 10 ahead of their first shows of the year.

While the Snowbirds are regular sights in the Comox Valley, trips down Island are more rare but not unheard of.

In July 2021, the Snowbirds and the Canadian Armed Forces CF-18 demonstration team conducted fly-pasts of Oceanside and Nanaimo, en route to Victoria.

It was part of ‘Operation Inspiration’ which saw the group fly past hospitals across the country to show support for front line workers.

Ferris said they’ll be using their time on Vancouver Island to prep for what is shaping up to be a busy schedule of air shows and other events, mainly in the United States.

“The reason why we go to Comox is to train, to ramp up our season and get ready for the air shows. Comox is a second home for us and it’s always good to get out of the Prairie winter and get to Comox, it’s like a jump into spring for us.”

A tragic accident immediately cut short the team’s 2020 tour when then-public affairs officer Capt. Jennifer Casey was killed in a crash on departure from Kamloops, bound for Comox.

The accident occurred just days before scheduled flyovers of Parksville and Nanaimo.
