QUALICUM BEACH — A home invasion in which the assailants allegedly threatened the victim with a weapon resulted in the arrest of two suspects hours later.

Oceanside RCMP said Spencer Lee Schaeffer and Teresa Marie Evenson of Nanaimo are charged following an incident on Thursday, March 10 in a rural area north of Qualicum Beach at the victim’s home.

According to police, the victim reported being held and threatened with a firearm, while various items were stolen including the victim’s vehicle.

Later on Thursday, the two suspects were arrested in Nanaimo.

The following day police said the suspects’ home was raided where a firearm believed to be used during the home invasion, along with some of the victim’s stolen items were recovered.

The victim and the accused are known to each other, Oceanside RCMP stated.

Schaeffer, 36, was charged with robbery and possession of firearm while prohibited. Evenson, 34, faces charges of robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of stolen property and theft of a motor vehicle.

Schaeffer and Evenson appeared in court Monday, March 14 and remain in police custody ahead of follow-up court appearances next week.

Schaeffer is well known to police and has multiple convictions to his name. He has rotated in and out of jail since 2003 for a range of offences, including assault, drug trafficking, weapons offences and driving infractions.

He was sentenced to eight months in jail in 2020 for property crimes in Nanaimo earlier in the year in which he was caught with a backpack full of break-in tools and weapons, including a homemade taser.

Court was told at the time a heroin addiction was a common theme behind Schaeffer’s longstanding criminal lifestyle.
