Cyclist seriously injured in Parksville highway hit and run

PARKSVILLE — A cyclist was seriously injured following a collision on the Island Hwy. with the offending vehicle fleeing the scene.

Emergency services were called to Hwy. 19 north of the the Englishman River overpass near Parksville just before 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 6 after a vehicle hit a cyclist on the northbound shoulder.

Cpl. Mike Halskov from RCMP BC Highway Patrol said in a release the cyclist, a man in his 30’s was taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the vehicle involved in left the scene.

“BC Highway Patrol in Parksville has assumed conduct of the file with assistance from the Oceanside RCMP, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and the Forensic Identification Service.”

BC Emergency Health Services confirmed to NanaimoNewsNOW two ground ambulances and one air ambulance were sent to the scene and transported one person in serious, but stable condition.

Several witnesses have already spoken to police while investigators are asking for further dash cam footage or other people who saw the incident to come forward.

They’re looking for people around the scene from 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

BC EHS were joined by Oceanside RCMP, BC Highway Patrol and several volunteer fire departments at the scene.

Northbound lanes of Hwy. 19 were closed for several hours as a result of the incident, with traffic re-routed through Parksville.
