CHILLIWACK — The Clippers looked poised to take at least one point out of Chilliwack but a goal with just under three minutes to play proved to be the winner for the Chiefs.

Brett Merner and Jeremie Payant scored in the first period to get Nanaimo off on the right foot. Merner at even strength and Payant shorthanded.

Nanaimo had a very strong opening 20 minutes outshooting the Chiefs 14-5.

Chilliwack turned the tables in the second outscoring Nanaimo 4-1.

The Chiefs scored twice in the first four and a half minutes before Brody Waters gave Nanaimo a temporary 3-2 lead.

Two markers 28 seconds apart late in the middle frame put Chilliwack into their first lead heading into the third.

Waters would tally again with five minutes left to play but a strange deflection goal with 2:42 left on the clock proved to be the game winner.

An empty netter in the final minute was icing on the cake for Chilliwack.

Waters, Jeremie Payant and Keighan Gerrie all had two points for the Clippers.

Lachlan Getz was the game’s first star and had four assists for the Chiefs while Mateo Mrsic notched two goals including the game winner.

Nanaimo had the shot advantage at 42-40 with neither team able to register a power play marker.

The Clippers were 0/4 and the Chiefs 0/3.

Nanaimo and Chilliwack will go head to head once again in the Clippers next game on March 4 at Frank Crane Arena.

On March 6 Nanaimo will entertain Surrey.
