Feb 23, 2022 | 11:21 AM

LADYSMITH — RCMP have called in the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit to investigate what they believe to be a “suspicious sudden death.”

Emergency responders were called out to an areas off Timberland Forest Service Rd., north of Ladysmith around 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21.

Cst. Alex Bérubé said a call made to 911 stated a man riding a dirt bike had died while out with a small group of individuals.

“What we know is that there was a potential firearm discharged in the area at the time of the incident. We’re not ruling out any criminality or whether this was accidental. The course of the investigation will provide more information to investigators as they collect evidence.”

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bérubé couldn’t confirm the number of people in the riding party, where the firearm was discharged from or whether it was the direct result of the man’s death.

No arrests have been made while the BC Coroners Service is investigating in conjunction with RCMP.

The Major Crimes Unit is asking anyone with information on the incident to contact them at 250 380 6211.
