NANAIMO — Residents of a home escaped serious injuries following a late afternoon house fire.

Fire Rescue crews were called to a home in the 2500 block of Quill Dr., between Rosstown Rd. and Labieux Rd. just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

A nearby neighbour, Anthony, told NanaimoNewsNOW he was preparing for an evening motorbike ride when he and his grandfather spotted smoke.

“I jumped on the bike and came down here and the flames in the back were massive. We then noticed [the lone resident] parked right on that chair over there and he was in and out of consciousness.”

He added another neighbour, a registered nurse, was able to tend to the resident until paramedics arrived on scene to treat him for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The man was the only person home at the time of the fire. Another couple of live on the same property were out at the time walking their dog.

The fire itself appeared to be contained to the rear of the building and was quickly extinguished by Fire Rescue crews, with only light smoke visible about 25 minutes after response.
