Second degree murder charge laid in Nanaimo coffee shop homicide

Feb 14, 2022 | 9:36 AM

NANAIMO — A single charge has been laid after a man was found dead inside Buzz Coffee House on Rutherford Rd.

The BC Prosecution Service confirmed James Carey Turok was charged with second degree murder the day following the Saturday, Feb. 12 incident.

The 29-year-old Turok remains in police custody following a brief Sunday evening court appearance.

He is scheduled to next appear in provincial court in Nanaimo on Feb. 21.

A second degree murder charge implies a deliberate killing without the pre-planning elements which would have constituted a first degree murder charge.

Buzz Coffee House remained closed on Monday, Feb. 14 with a small bouquet of flowers left on the front door step.

The body of one man was found around 9 a.m. on Saturday, with another man on scene was taken into police custody.

O’Brien said investigators established no clear link between the two people involved and categorized the incident as random.

Police were originally called to the commercial complex for a check well being call when they found the deceased individual.

RCMP were on scene at Buzz Coffee house all weekend long, while a BC Coroners Service vehicle was also seen parked outside.

Two additional search warrants were carried out over the weekend in relation to the murder, police said.

Police are asking the public for any information from those who were at Buzz Coffee House between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday to contact them at 250-754-2345 with file number 2022-4898.
