NANAIMO — Another local seniors care home has confirmed a COVID-19 outbreak.

Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence’s Sandpiper unit is the site of the latest declaration by Island Health, where three residents have recently tested positive.

Much like other outbreaks, Island Health said it is pausing admissions and transfers to the affected Sandpiper unit.

Essential visits can continue, however staff movement is being monitored and limited, while extra testing and screening is underway for residents and staff.

The facility has seen several outbreaks throughout the pandemic, the most recent of which was announced Oct. 31, 2021 and over roughly three weeks later.

Chartwell Malaspina is owned and operated by Chartwell Retirement Residences and located on Eleventh St. in the Chase River neighbourhood.

Two other outbreaks are currently ongoing on the mid-Island with Nanaimo’s Dufferin Place home to 27 confirmed positive tests over the last two weeks.

Parksville’s Arrowsmith Lodge is also on Island Health’s list with two residents in the Cottonwood and Dogwood units of the facility.
