School District 68 to implement COVID vaccine mandate for all staff

Jan 21, 2022 | 11:06 AM

NANAIMO — Local school board trustees voted in favour of creating a vaccine mandate for all of its employees in district 68.

At a Thursday, Jan 20 special board meeting, school board trustees requested staff to create a vaccine policy, however details of the mandate have yet to be created.

An SD 68 news release stated it’s expected an administrative procedure will be presented to staff at a future board meeting “and will include direction on the collection of employee vaccination status and the planning for testing for unvaccinated employees following sufficient time for all employees to become vaccinated.”

No start date or testing procedure was announced at this time.

The policy will ensure exemptions for medical reasons or under the province’s Human Rights Code or Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Very few school districts in the province have active COVID vaccination mandates for its employees.

A new provincial health order announced this week compels teachers and support staff in B.C. Schools to report their COVID-19 vaccination status to their employer if requested.

The move follows similar moves by local municipalities including the City of Nanaimo, Regional District of Nanaimo and Town of Ladysmith.
