Clippers stunned by Cowichan comeback in 6-5 overtime loss

NANAIMO — The Clippers looked poised for their 20th win of the season but had to settle for a single point in a 6-5 overtime loss to Cowichan Valley.

Nanaimo led three times in the game, including 5-3 with ten minutes remaining, but failed to hold on against a team battling for their playoff lives.

The Clippers had two points each from Austin Spiridakis, Jeremie Payant, Keighan Gerrie and Jack O’Brien.

Sean Donaldson scored a shorthanded goal in the first period leaving him tied as the BCHL’s goal scoring leading with 26.

The Capitals key player was Luke Haymes who put up a goal and three assists in the contest.

The final shots were 41-29 for Nanaimo with Jed Baliotti taking the loss to Cowichan Valley netminder McCoy Bidewell.

Nanaimo was 0/2 on the power play and killed off the Capitals only man advantage.

With one game left in the season series the Clippers have a 3-2-1 record against Cowichan.

Nanaimo’s next outing is a home date with the Victoria Grizzlies on Jan. 23 at 2 p.m.
