NANAIMO — The next development of active transportation infrastructure in the city is about to begin.

Construction crews are expected to shut down Fourth St. from Bruce Ave. to Pine St. in January for the first phase of complete streets upgrades to the area.

The work will be similar in scope to recent changes on Bowen Rd. and ongoing upgrades to Metral Dr. Bike lanes, additional pedestrian infrastructure will highlight the work.

“Upgrades will include new cycling and shared use facilities, new concrete sidewalks, improved transit stops, improved intersection crossings and replacement of underground water mains and storm sewers,” a release from the City noted.

Detours will be in effect for the entirety of the project, with worked expected to be complete in the summer.

It will upgrade 540 metres of water main, 470 metres of storm sewer and add 470 metres of new sidewalks on Fourth St. between Harewood Rd. and Pine St.

Nearly a kilometre of dedicated bike lanes are also planned.

The new infrastructure will begin an active transportation link between the downtown and Vancouver Island University, part of the Nanaimo Transportation Master Plan.

Combined with the E&N Rail corridor, Bowen Rd., Metral Dr., Front St. and other main corridor upgrades, the City is looking to create a safe, bike and pedestrian friendly route from one end of Nanaimo to another.

Budget for the project is $1.8 million, including a $750,000 contribution from the federal government.

The City had originally budgeted $1.3 million in December 2020 for the 2021 budget.
