Nanaimo Canoe Kayak Club to benefit from boathouse roof

NANAIMO — Volunteer members of the Nanaimo Canoe Kayak Club have been hard at work installing a metal roof on their boat storage facility at Loudon Park.

The project was made possible thanks to a donation of materials by Slegg Building Materials.

NCKC commodore Ashley Rowe said installing a new roof had been a priority for some time now.

“The club has outgrown its original boathouse over the years. This project will help to expand the lifespan of our large team boats for racing and minimize costs for equipment repairs.”

The boathouse itself is a shared facility for both the NCKC and the Nanaimo Rowing Club.

Sun damage and overhanging tree branches are an ongoing concern which will be mitigated by replacing aging tarps with a permanent covered structure.

In preparation for the coming season boat racks are being constructed and repairs are ongoing to things like canoe seats and kayak foot pedals.

Plans are also in the works to restore the club’s large voyageur canoes.

Each has a replacement value of over $14,000 and are well used through the NCKC’s school field trip program, summer camps, and group bookings.

Despite the cold winter weather in Nanaimo training runs all year round for Nanaimo’s high level paddlers.

However the club’s site on Long Lake is busiest in the heart of regatta season which runs from April to September.
