Clippers beat Cowichan 6-3 thanks to strong third period

DUNCAN — The Clippers and Capitals were in a tight 3-2 game for 40 minutes but Nanaimo scored three times in the final frame to win 6-3.

In the first period the two clubs exchanged five goals with Austin Spiridakis, Michael Craig and Jeremie Payant scoring for the Clippers.

The Craig and Payant markers were on the man advantage which went 3/6 on the night.

Goalies Cooper Black and Evan May were perfect in the second period although Nanaimo directed 22 shots at Cowichan’s net.

Max Itagaki on the power play and Sean Donaldson added to the lead for the visitors while Brody Waters iced the game with an empty netter after the Capitals had made it 5-3 mid way through the third.

Nanaimo’s top line of Donaldson, Itagaki and Fraser combined for six points with Donaldson collecting his league leading 22nd goal of the season.

The final shots were 46-42 for the Clippers who gave up two of their three goals against on Cowichan power plays.

The Dec 15 three stars were 1) Max Itagaki 2) Luke Haymes 3) Sean Donaldson.

Nanaimo is 3-1 against the Capitals with another head to head game at home on Dec. 17.

It will be the Clippers last home game of 2021 and the players will be wearing their special retro jerseys for the first time at Frank Crane Arena.
