British Columbians advised to prepare for winter storm

Dec 9, 2021 | 1:30 PM

With a winter storm set to hit southern British Columbia this weekend, the province is advising people to prepare for possible adverse events.

Environment Canada is predicting severe winter weather from Friday to Sunday, which will likely bring heavy snowfall to Highway 3, especially in the area near Manning Provincial Park between Hope and Princeton.

This corridor is the main connector for commercial vehicles between the Interior and Lower Mainland, and drivers are advised to be prepared for poor road conditions and reduced visibility.

There may also be a risk of avalanche activity and increased water flow along that highway.

Along with preparing for poor driving conditions, the province has other tips for both drivers and the general public during winter storms:

  • Wear clothing appropriate for the weather , dress in layers with wind and water resistant outer layers
  • Be prepared for power outages, have a household emergency plan and a well stocked emergency kit
  • If a power line comes down assume it is live and dangerous, stay back at least 10 metres and call 911
  • Drive to conditions , be aware that reduced daylight hours and blowing snow can further reduce visibility
  • Be cautious on wet and icy roads, maintain a safe following distance
  • Keep an emergency kit in vehicles that include warm clothing, winter footwear, food and water, shovel, flashlight, fully charged cell phone for emergency calls
  • Have properly rated winter tires on a vehicle before starting a trip

British Columbians are also advised to monitor Environment Canada’s website for any updates on severe weather, and to check DriveBC for road condition updates prior to setting off on a trip.
