QUALICUM BEACH — Following an unusually dark and quiet 2020 winter season at Milner Gardens, crowds are returning for the popular holiday spectacle.

An ever-growing display of more than 100,000 Christmas lights are outfitted at the sprawling 70 acre property on the Qualicum Beach waterfront.

Milner Gardens and Woodland Society executive director Geoff Ball said showing off their elaborate winter holiday themed property beginning Friday, Dec. 3 means the world to their staff and volunteers.

“It’s going to be wonderful to have people back in here,” Ball said. “Seeing kids of all ages out enjoying it getting excited for the holidays, it’s going to be great.”

The popular event was cancelled last year due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions.

Milner Christmas Magic runs Friday to Sunday during the first three weeks of December between 5 and 8 p.m., with viewing up until 8:30 p.m. through Dec. 19 at 2179 Island Hwy. West.

Attendance is by suggested donation of $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.

Outfitting the property with glowing Christmas lights and displays launched in 2003, swelling to a much larger event annually since.

“We started off with very humble beginnings with just a few nights in November and it has just grown steadily every year. This year we have to do a few changes just to keep everybody safe,” Ball said.

Milner’s house and cottage are shut down, while the gift shop will be open. Food and refreshments will be served outside, Ball said.

Santa’s sleigh is set up for picture-taking and letters to Santa Claus destined for the North Pole can be dropped off at the on-site mailbox.

Ball said traffic controllers will help safely guide motorists since most people park on the shoulder of the Island Hwy. Since limited on-site parking is available.

Milner Gardens and Woodland provides educational programming for people of all ages.
