PARKSVILLE — Crews have begun work on the centerpiece of a substantial downtown Parksville revitalization project.

The City stated a section of Memorial Ave. west of the Alberni Hwy. is closed to allow crews to install underground utilities and services.

Road resurfacing, landscaping and construction of a public plaza will start in the new year.

Memorial Ave at McMillan St. will be converted to single-lane for eastbound traffic which will veer into a City parking lot backing onto Hirst Ave. W. The remainder of the pedestrian-oriented street will include room for food trucks

On-street parallel parking will remain, according to detailed plans on the City’s website.

The adjacent section of Hirst Ave. W between McMillan St. and the Alberni Hwy. Is also being rejuvenated.

Underground utilities on the stretch of Hirst Ave. W, curbs and a first lawyer of asphalt have been installed, while final resurfacing, pavement markings and landscaping will be done early in 2022, according to the City.

The City anticipates enhancements to Memorial Ave. and Hirst Ave. W will be complete in the spring and within the $3.5 million budget.
