NANAIMO — COVID-19 outbreaks are no longer impacting a pair of Nanaimo healthcare facilities.

Island Health reported Monday, Nov. 22 outbreaks at the Transitional Care Unit of NRGH and Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence were declared over.

A total of 14 people, including 11 patients, at the Transitional Care Unit tested positive for COVID-19 after it was first detected in late October.

Three people died from COVID-19 complications during the outbreak.

All cases remained inside the unit, with patient transfers and staff movements closely monitored or suspended completely throughout.

Island Health said the unit is now operating normally.

“Staff and medical staff at NRGH demonstrated resilience and professionalism during challenging circumstances and continued to deliver high quality, compassionate care to patients,” stated a release from the health authority.

It was the fourth outbreak at NRGH throughout the pandemic, the second in the transitional care unit and the largest one overall in terms of number of people affected.

Also over is the outbreak at Chartwell Malaspina, first declared Oct. 31.

Two staff members and three patients inside the Hummingbird unit rested positive with the area quickly isolated from other areas of the care centre.

Social visits to the unit will resume Wednesday, Nov. 24, as will admissions and transfers.
