COVID-19 outbreaks expand at NRGH, Chartwell Malaspina

NANAIMO — More cases of COVID-19 are being detected in two ongoing healthcare outbreaks in the city.

Island Health confirmed one additional case was added to an outbreak in the Transitional Care Unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on Thursday, Nov. 4. It marks five infections at the hospital, all of which are patients.

An initial case was detected Sunday, Oct. 31 with further testing confirming three more among patients.

The unit continues to be isolated from the rest of the hospital, with admissions suspended and transfers in and out closely monitored.

The outbreak, announced Tuesday, Nov. 2, is the second one at the unit and fourth overall in the hospital throughout the pandemic.

A new case has also emerged at Chartwell Malaspina care home in Nanaimo.

Three cases in the Hummingbird Unit forced Island Health to declare an outbreak on Sunday.

Island Health reported one new case in a resident were detected through follow-up testing on Thursday.

Cases continue to be limited to the Hummingbird Unit, according to the health authority.

Social visits, admissions and transfers in the facility are suspended for the duration of the outbreak.
