Island Health records 10,000th COVID-19 case, 65 new

NANAIMO — Island Health has passed a major milestone.

The health authority recorded its 10,000th COVID-19 cases with 65 new cases recorded Thursday, Oct. 21. Thirty-three were in the central Island region.

Since the start of the pandemic, 10,031 cases were recorded within Island Health.

Active cases saw a rise to 431, an increase of 18 from Wednesday’s report. Central Island continues to account for most of the active cases with 217 currently diagnosed.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Hospitals on Vancouver Island have 52 patients admitted, including 24 in intensive care, according to data from the BC Centre for Disease Control.

B.C. reported 715 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday as active cases rose slightly to 4,965.

Of the active cases, 377 people are hospitalized for their symptoms including 136 receiving critical care province-wide.

Four additional fatalities linked to COVID-19 were also reported, all in Northern Health. To date, 2,096 people have lost their lives as a direct result of the pandemic.

The province vaccination rate sits at 83.8 per cent of all eligible people aged 12 and older.

Greater Nanaimo (82 per cent) and Oceanside (83 per cent) sit just below the B.C. average, but have the highest rate of vaccination outside southern Vancouver Island.

Peace River and Fort Nelson have the lowest vaccination uptake, with only between 52 and 54 per cent of residents fully vaccinated.
