Gerrie’s hat trick leads Clippers to 4-1 win in Powell River

POWELL RIVER – A hat trick from Keighan Gerrie propelled the. Clippers to a 4-1 win over the Kings.

Nanaimo built up a 3-0 lead in the first period with two goals by Gerrie and a power marker from Charles Tardiff.

Gerrie completed the hat trick on a breakaway in the second period to give Nanaimo full control heading into the third.

A late power play goal by Hunter Andrew gave Powell River some life but Cooper Black was excellent in net making 36 saves on 37 shots.

Nanaimo fired 24 shots at the Kings goaltending tandem of Zak Brice and Kenny Gerow.

The Clippers went 8/9 on the penalty kill including an extended five on three disadvantage in the first period.

Penalty killing was a big story throughout the entire opening weekend with Nanaimo finishing 13/14 in back to back wins.

Cooper Black was named a star in both victories and stopped 69 of 72 shots he faced.

With five points in two games Tristan Fraser and Max Itagaki were tied for the BCHL scoring lead after Oct. 9 action.

The Clippers will prepare for their home opening weekend on Oct. 15 and 16 when they host the same Powell River kings in a pair of games at Frank Crane Arena.
