Oct 8, 2021 | 11:03 PM

POWELL RIVER – The Clippers never trailed in a 6-2 season opening victory against the Kings.

The duo of Tristan Fraser and Max Itagaki combined for seven points in the win and Shaun Mahoney also chipped in two goals.

Mahoney and Fraser scored less than a minute apart in the second period to break a 1-1 tie and give Nanaimo a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes.

In the third, the Clippers extended the lead to 5-1 before the teams traded goals at the end of the game.

Itagaki, Skyler Cameron and Matteo Turrin had the other goals for Nanaimo while netminder Cooper Black made 33 saves.

The Clippers also enjoyed special teams success going 2/4 on the power play and 5/5 killing penalties.

Powell River and Nanaimo had not played head to head since Feb. 15, 2020 because of COVID-19.

Now the long time rivals will play the next three games in a row.

The Clippers visit the Kings at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 and then host Powell River twice as they welcome fans back to Frank Crane Crane for a pair of home opening contests on Oct. 15 and 16.
