Central, south Island split above-average COVID-19 case increase

NANAIMO — A vast majority of new cases reported within Island Health on Wednesday stemmed from the lower two thirds of the Island.

88 new cases were reported by Island Health on Wednesday, Oct. 6, slightly above recent daily increases. The central and south Island accounted for 42 each, with the remaining four coming in the north.

The central Island also saw the largest bump in active cases, with 264 currently diagnosed which represents a nine per cent increase from the day prior. The south Island has 342 active cases, with 53 in the north.

Since the start of the pandemic, Island Health has recorded 9,049 total cases with 659 currently active.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Hospitalizations on Vancouver Island for COVID symptoms dropped marginally to 39, including 22 in intensive care, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.

Provincially, 752 new cases were confirmed Wednesday by public health. Active cases rose minimally to 5,945.

B.C. hospitals now list 350 people admitted for COVID symptoms including 136 in critical care.

Public health also recorded nine fatalities linked to COVID-19, including one from Island Health.

To date, 1,992 people in the province have lost their lives due to COVID related ailments.
