Island Health adds 216 new cases over weekend reporting periods

NANAIMO — Additions to Island Health’s COVID-19 case counts over the weekend fell in line with recent norms.

A total of 216 new cases were added over three reporting periods, an average of 72 cases per day. Of the weekend additions, 99 were in the central Island area, while the south lead the way with 103.

Active cases increased by just 19 however, to sit at 554 as of Monday, Sept. 27. The central Island saw a jump of 22 since the health authority last reported on Friday, Sept. 24, now reported at 198.

The south Island has 318 active cases, unchanged from Friday, while the north has the remaining 38.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control 32 patients are admitted to Island hospitals for COVID-19 symptoms, including 18 receiving critical or intensive care.

Provincially, 2,239 cases were recorded over the same three reporting periods, an average of nearly 750 each day.

Active cases saw a marginal increase to 6,098 including 303 people hospitalized, 141 of whom are in intensive care.

Eighteen new fatalities linked to COVID-19 were reported over the weekend, including three from the Island Health region.

B.C.’s vaccination rate ticked up to 80.5 per cent over the weekend with nearly 3.73 million people considered fully vaccinated after receiving their second dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine.
