Aidan Webber Memorial Race returns after COVID hiatus

NANAIMO — A BMX event to remember a fallen hero and support the local race community is back on track.

After a year off because of COVID-19 the Aidan Webber Memorial Race and Pro-Am will return to the Marie Davidson Bike Park on Sept. 25.

The second time event honours the BMX rider who lost his life in a workplace accident in 2019.

The race itself is a triple points race which will attract riders from all over the Island, the mainland and other parts of Canada.

Aiden’s mother Nicole Webber said supporting local youth through the Aiden Webber Legacy Fund is paramount for her family.

“One hundred per cent of the profits from the race day go into the legacy fund. Providing the pro purse is a great way to support the BMX community, but providing a bursary to a kid in need is an amazing way to support Nanaimo as a whole.”

The fund will offer $1,000 per year for one student chosen by the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools board to pursue their education.

Webber hopes to offer bursaries in other regions of Vancouver Island in the future.

“Maybe in the Comox Valley area where I spent part of the time raising the children. I’d also like to extend into the greater Victoria area, we spent lots of our days racing there.”

Webber expects 100-200 racers on the track and several hundred spectators.

“At this point we have raised $7,000 towards the pro am which will be divided equally between the male and the female winner.”

Many people from Aidan Webber’s racing days will be there including Chris Johnson who will be the track announcer for the race and Elite Canadian champion Ryan Tougas who will be leading the flag lap.

Details on the race and other activities happening throughout the day are available at the Nanaimo BMX Facebook page.
