Signature Dish: Sweet Spot Bake Shop’s Treat Box

NANAIMO — Your sweet tooth won’t know what to do once you step into the charming Sweet Spot Bake Shop.

The display case is nearly overflowing with delicious treats, everything from Nanaimo bars, cheese cake in Mason jars and cookies, with muffins and donuts arranged delicately on top.

Everything available at the Parksville shop can be packaged in owner Morgan Ray’s signature treat box. Each box is loaded to the brim with every snack you want. Every corner is filled with something delicious and sometimes even stacked to ensure as much sugary and savoury goodness is packed inside.

Ray said each box is filled and arranged to be a “beautiful masterpiece,” as is everything in her recently opened shop.

“I think the greatest joy for me is when people come in and they see the unexpected, or they see the things they saw in their childhood they don’t get to see everywhere else. When customers come in they’re maybe expecting to see the basic things you’d see at a traditional bakery but they’re like ‘Oh what is this, what is this?’ What started as them coming in from a square or a cookie ends up being a whole box.”

Every item is made from scratch at the shop and fresh, with Ray and her chefs working long through the night to ensure everything’s ready to go the next day.

Many items of the shelves can be made gluten or sugar free as well as vegan for anyone with dietary restrictions. There’s truly something for everyone at the Sweet Spot Bake Shop.

“I real want to emphasize my location as a place for all to be included and welcome,” Ray said. “I really enjoy the feeling when someone comes in and gets to share with their family. The biggest compliment is when someone comes in and says they’re just grabbing something for someone else.”

Ray’s sense of community is evident as soon as you step into the shop. Artwork on the wall is from local artists. You’ll find delicious treats from other vendors throughout the community on the shelves, from Sweet and Dandy Cotton Candy in Nanaimo to Early Urban Girl Farm sprouts and edible flowers from Nanoose.

Hand-crafted charcuterie boards from The Noble Grazer, available on Friday and Saturday, quickly sell out in the mornings.

The Sweet Spot Bake Shop at 5-281 Island Hwy. East in Parksville is open 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
