NANAIMO — A long battle, followed by a longer wait has resulted in a Nanaimo man claiming top honours at the Port Alberni Ultimate Fishing Salmon Derby.

Terry Good snagged a 31 pound, 12 ounce chinook salmon at Whittlestone, near Bamfield on Saturday, Sept. 4.

Good said it was his tenth year at the derby and he was on a boat with friends who’d previously claimed top honours.

“We thought we had a pretty nice fish, so we wanted to keep fishing through the bite but then we brought it in and 31 pounds, 12 ounces…it was fantastic.”

For his efforts, Good took home the $10,000 top prize, but faced a long wait to see if his catch would stand up.

Ladysmith’s Michael Black reeled in a 31 pound, two ounce fish on Monday, Sept. 6 while Len Van Vliet hooked a 29 pound chinook on Sunday, Sept. 5.

“We were fishing a white hoochie, moved it down to 51 feet and watching for a while then ‘wham-o’, we got it. It was basically the only fish we got all day,” Good said. “First tyee I’ve every caught in my life, biggest fish I’ve ever caught.”

Black and Van Vliet took home $5,000 prizes for top fish on their respective days.
