NANAIMO — The City of Nanaimo is actively seeking feedback on its draft plan to retrofit the amenities available at Westwood Lake.

The idea of substantial improvements, valued at upwards of $1 million, were discussed and endorsed in May 2021, with the view of improvement accessibility and adding a variety of items to better the experience at the popular summer hot spot.

“Westwood Lake Park was specifically brought up through engagement with several community organizations through Phase 1 of the ReImagine Nanaimo initiative with a keen interest in the park and surrounding areas,” a release from the City noted.

The first phase of work will focus around expanding First Beach, closest to Westwood Rd., increasing parking capacity, add picnic and special event areas, creation of a new playground and improved traffic flow for boat launching.

“Elements in the site plans are interchangeable and are intended to explore what amenities the public would like to see at this popular park,” the release read.

The prospect of adding to and renovating the Westwood Lake area is enjoying extensive support from City councillors.

Erin Hemmens spoke strongly in favour of the initiative during a May 19, 2021 meeting.

“In terms of return on investment I think this one is a clear winner, Westwood Lake is seeing more use every year. It’s also a key in terms of sports tourism with the growing mountain bike community.”

Surveys by the City suggest more than 800 people use the trail surrounding Westwood Lake daily, while the parking lots on site are often crammed to capacity.

The site was purchased by the City in 1957 for park use, after initially being dammed for electricity production in the early 1900’s before those plans were abandoned.

Those interested in submitting their ideas for changes to Westwood Lake, can do so by visiting the City of Nanaimo website.
