Free youth bus fares to help encourage next generation of transit riders

NANAIMO — Children under the age of 12 won’t have to pay to get on board public transit systems throughout the province starting Wednesday, Sept. 1.

RDN board chair Tyler Brown strongly supports the drastic move, stating some sort of credentials will eventually be established for eligible riders.

He’s convinced policies like this will help lead to tangible results of more riders in their regional system and better service.

“If we can be driving and build habits in those twelve and under we’re going to get more riders over the long-term and our service will match the demand.”

The recent free transit for youth under 12 announcement from the province is intended to reduce future greenhouse gas emissions, encourage future long-term transit riders and save families hundreds of dollars a year.

Brown said constantly improving their transit service is a key priority.

“Whether it’s to work, recreation or school, we want transit to be a viable option for every single person in our major urban centres.”

BC Transit will require children five-years-old and younger to be accompanied by a person who’s at least 12-years-old.

The free bus for youth program also applies to handyDart, while in the Lower Mainland the SkyTrain, Seabus and West Coast Express are also included.
