City to launch online survey for high-profile downtown Nanaimo block

NANAIMO — Public opinions will be gathered on overhauling a strategically vital block in the middle of Nanaimo’s downtown core.

Starting Thursday, Aug. 26, the City officially begins gathering feedback on revitalizing the Terminal Avenue/Commercial Street area, known as “The Hub” through an online survey running until Oct. 4.

The City recently purchased three Terminal Ave. properties between Commercial St. and Esplanade St., triggering conceptual designs and now a public consultation process to enhance the deteriorating area.

Several ideas for the 500 block of Terminal Ave. are under consideration, including a permanent off-street downtown transit exchange in the southbound lane, while re-paving the stretch of road and beautification projects are also planned.

A public plaza and improved lighting at the recently purchased Jean Burns building site are on the table, as are cycling connectivity enhancements between Albert St. and Terminal Ave.

Another key pending change is re-aligning the awkward Victoria/Albert/Wallace intersection.

In a news release, the City stated numerous studies in the Terminal Ave/Commercial St. zone and surrounding downtown areas identified pedestrian, cycling and transit opportunities.

“Feedback for The Hub project will focus on early directions that have been developed based on these previous studies and public input shared over the years,” the release stated.

Mid-2022 is targeted by City officials to begin construction to enhance the 500 block of Terminal Ave.

The City intends to implement the improvements next year, while similar, longer range improvements further north on Terminal Ave are expected in 2024 and 2025.
