New COVID-19 cases in Island Health jump by 112 in one weekend

NANAIMO — A substantial number of new COVID-19 cases were found over the weekend within Island Health.

The health authority confirmed 112 new cases since Friday on Monday, Aug. 16, to a total of 5,677. The number of active cases rose to 266 from 217 over the weekend.

Central Island is home to 35 of the new cases, with 87 active. Roughly two-thirds of the new cases were found in the southern areas.

Seven people are in Island Health hospitals with four receiving intensive care, according to the BC CDC.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

B.C. as a whole saw slightly more than 1,400 new cases reported over the weekend, equalling roughly 460 a day. This is down from the number of new cases confirmed each day last week.

The number of active cases across the province ticked over 5,000 with 104 people in hospital and 47 of them receiving intensive care.

This is a rise of 26 people in hospital and eight receiving intensive care from Friday.
