Nanaimo police identify car which ran over homeless man after altercation

Jul 29, 2021 | 10:51 AM

NANAIMO — Police are continuing their investigation into the attack on a local man living on the street.

Nanaimo RCMP shared a photo of the car which hit 45-year-old Charles Samuel Salter around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 10 near the Victoria Ave. and 102 St. intersection.

Cst. Gary O’Brien admitted it’s a blurry photo taken from an exterior security camera at a residence in the area, but had high hopes it will point police in the right direction.

“Not the best of pictures, but it’s something to put out to the public and hopefully they’ll be able to look at it and say they know who owns it or have seen it before.”

The photo is of the car as it sped away from the scene, where Salter was first bearsprayed by people inside the car and then run over.

“He’s still in rough shape,” O’Brien said of Salter’s condition. “He was in hospital in Victoria for a number of weeks and has recently been transported back to Nanaimo where he’s currently in hospital.”

Anyone with information on the vehicle or incident is urged to call Nanaimo RCMP.
