Signature Dish: Wolf Brewing’s Sour Howler

NANAIMO — Wolf Brewing’s Sour Howler is a west coast twist on a traditional beer.

It’s a crisp, refreshing and tart beer perfect for summer.

Wolf brewmaster Kevin Ward said they wanted a sour beer that wouldn’t turn away all but the most hardened sour drinkers.

“It’s not a face twister, it’s just very tart. In Berlin if this was served you’d get a shot of raspberry syrup to go with it. We decided to go with fresh Abbotsford raspberries in the fermentation process instead to get that raspberry flavour.”

The Sour Howler represents the philosophy behind Wolf Brewing.

“We pride ourselves that everything we do is based on the solid foundation of European tradition but then we add a twist of West Coast creativity,” Ward said.

Hailing from Europe himself, Ward insists on using European grains to boost the traditional flavours in their beer but strives to keep it local as much as possible in every other aspect.

“People have been drinking these beers for hundreds if not thousands of year. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. But we like to play around and bring some innovations and new flavours to the game.”

The Sour Howler is a seasonal beer for the summer but that could change.

It sold out last summer so Ward made a double batch and hoped it would last until the end of the season.

The Sour Howler can be bought in cans at liquor stores around Nanaimo and at Wolf Brewing’s Victoria Rd. location on tap and in cans.

Their tasting room and outdoor patio opens at 12 each day and usually stays open until 7 p.m., sometimes longer.
